Vocabulary for Learning English Filmmakers

Many specialty words and phrases are used in filmmaking, and the film business, and anybody interested in a career in cinema should get acquainted with some of the most widely used vocabulary.

A vocabulary of film production terminology and words linked with film and movies in the English language is provided below.

Abby Singer Shot: The second-to-last shot of the day is an Abby Singer shot. It is named for Abby Singer, a well-known film assistant director and production manager.

Ambient light is the natural or pre-existing light in a space before providing extra lighting. Typically, ambient light is mild.

Anamorphic: The cinematography technique of shooting a widescreen picture on regular 35 mm film or other visual recording medium with a non-widescreen native aspect ratio is known as anamorphic format.

Backdrop - refers to an extensive photographic painting or backing seen in a scene's background. It usually depicts a landscape, such as mountains. Before, film studios either filmed on-site or used green screens, and backdrops were more regularly employed.

Background - anything in the action's rear plane. The foreground refers to anything that happens in the action's front plane. It is frequently abbreviated as "b.g."

Background music - the score or music that may be heard in the background of a scene.

Call sheet - a timetable distributed to crew members throughout the film's production. It informs every department member of their arrival time on set. It also specifies which actors are required for particular situations.

Call time (or calltime) is when a production's cast and staff must be on set and ready to work. Because they need everything prepared for shooting, the crew generally has an earlier call time than the performers.

Cameo is a brief appearance by a prominent actor, director, or celebrity in a film.

Dailies - duplicates of video captured the day before and evaluated. After the day (or the start of the following day), directors will review this material to see what they have. Dailies are essential for ensuring proper continuity and sound quality.

Deep focus shot is a cinematography technique used to depict a significant depth of field. Wide-angle lenses with modest apertures achieve sharp focus in both distant and proximate planes within the same photograph.

Depth of field - the distance between a photograph's foreground, middle-ground, and background. Shallow depth of field may focus on only one of the planes, but deep depth of field will focus on all of them.
