VARIETY: ‘This Way Up’ Takes Top Windrider Intl. Student Film Festival Prize

By Alyssa Sage

The Windrider Intl. Student Film Festival — formerly the Angelus Student Film Festival — announced its 2016 winners Tuesday.

Jeremy Cloe’s This Way Up,” pictured, took the grand jury prize, while Kevin Lacy’s “Young Americans” nabbed the cinematic storytelling award, J. Christian Jensen’s “White Earth” won the outstanding documentary prize, Cameron Burnett’s “The Bench” took the outstanding short award and Henry Hughes’ “Day One” won the director’s choice award.

“Our stellar student filmmakers engage the human heart with stories that stay with audiences long after they leave the theater,” said WISFF director Monika Moreno-Lapp.  “These films are evidence that our theme — films that reflect the human condition with compassion, creativity and respect — is inherent to great storytelling.”

Student filmmakers submitted live-action or documentary short films to WISFF juries in hopes of winning one of three $10,000 prizes and an all expenses-paid trip to Park City, Utah, for both the 2016 WISFF awards ceremony and 2016 Sundance Film Festival.

Previous festival winners include Academy Award winner and showrunner on Amazon’s “Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street” Luke Matheny, Sundance jury prize winner Destin Daniel Cretton and “The Maze Runner” director Wes Ball

The next WISFF, and first under its new moniker, takes place in January 2016 in Park City during the Sundance Film Festival.
