Short Film Showcase

Windrider Announces Short Film Showcase

Building on a 15-year tradition of hosting forums at a variety of film festivals and community events around the world, the Windrider Institute announces a new dimension of our programming with a call for entries for the 2018 Windrider Short Film Showcase (WSFS).

Since 2004, the Windrider Forum has embraced the powerful storytelling potential of the short film genre. Our initial support for these talented filmmakers started when we collaborated with the Angelus Student Film Festival to host young filmmakers each year for the Windrider Forum at the Sundance Film Festival. Over the years we have also included many short films in our Windrider Forum community events around the world. In 2018, we are combining all of these projects to launch a new Windrider Short Film Showcase to highlight the work of talented filmmakers and some of the best short films.

The Windrider Short Film Showcase (WSFS) is seeking submissions for a variety of short film forms (narrative, documentary, animation, comedy, nonprofit/corporate storytelling, short-shorts, music video, etc,).  We are seeking to honor the storytelling potential of independent voices who reflect on the human condition with creativity and respect.

We are looking for:
  • Work by student filmmakers, emerging young filmmakers, and seasoned veteran filmmakers.
  • Films which imaginatively explore some of the following themes; COMPASSION, RESILIENCE, HOPE, HUMAN DIGNITY, DIVERSITY,  FREEDOM, EQUALITY, SPIRITUALITY, REDEMPTION, and the TRIUMPH OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT.

“Much of my career happened as a result of my student film being featured through the Windrider Forum. Windrider brought me to Sundance in 2005 where I made invaluable contacts, got incredible visibility, and this experience resulted in the introduction and getting my film into HBO. Windrider has also supported me and numerous films that were selected for the Sundance Film Festival.”

– Hilla Medalia, Documentary Director and Producer, Peabody Award Winner, Emmy Award Nominations
Documentaries include To Die in Jerusalem, After the Storm (2009), Web Junkie (2013), Dancing in Jaffa (2013), Censored Voices (2015), The Oslo Diaries (2018).

We are not a film festival in the traditional sense with a public submission process. Rather, as a Film Showcase, our programming team will curate a small number of films each year from a select number of film festivals and our vast network of Windrider filmmaker alums. We will honor our winning films and filmmakers by inviting them to become a part of the Windrider community and providing them with opportunities to screen their films at a variety of events with an engaged and appreciative audience.

Winning Films Attend Sundance Film Festival

From our semi-finalist list the winning films will go through jury selection to become eligible for our top prizes which include our premiere opportunity — an all-expenses paid trip to the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, UT, where the WSFS films will be showcased during the week-long Windrider Forum. There will also be opportunities to screen these films at Windrider Forum events around the country, events which include generous hospitality and creative collaboration.

Once selected to be a member of the Windrider community, we look for ways to promote the work and careers of these award-winning filmmakers. All of our showcase opportunities will enable these Windrider filmmakers to experience networking opportunities with other colleagues, build relationships that will support their filmmaking careers, and explore distribution deals with generous patrons and sponsors.

The inaugural Windrider Short Film Showcase in Fall 2018 will honor films in the following categories:
